Teaching British Standards

TEACHING BRITISH VALUES AT RIVERVIEW COFE PRIMARY & NURSERY SCHOOL

Our Christian values underpin our mission statement.  These values support children and adults in fostering positive relationships and provide the skills we all need to live in today's society.  They are linked to all that we teach and learn at Riverview.

RIVERVIEW VALUES

Love - To show love to everyone within our community.

Respect - To honour and be considerate of the differences between each other.

Trust - to live together in harmony as this is central to a civilised society.

Forgiveness - To recognise how we make mistakes and need forgiveness.

Hope - To give assurance in good times and bad.

Promoting Democracy at Riverview

Democracy is evident throughout our school.  Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council, pupil questionnaires and house captains.  Our behaviour expectations enable pupils to distinguish right from wrong, allowing children time for reflection to accept their responsibility for their choices and support them to make changes for the future.  We encourage a respect for democracy by modelling the voting process whenever appropriate, such as elections for house captains and class representatives for school council.

Promoting the Rule of Law at Riverview

Our Golden Rules are consistently reinforced throughout all aspects of school life.  Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and consequences when laws/rules are broken.

Promoting Individual Liberty at Riverview

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example, through our E-Safety teaching, RE lessons and collective act of worship.  Whether it be through choice of challenge, how they record work, selection of lunchtime activities or participation in our extensive extra-curricular clubs, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Promoting Mutual Respect at Riverview

Our Christian school ethos has revolved around our mission statement and 5 values which are part of all aspects of school life.  All pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how we live out our values.

Tolerance of and respect for those of all faiths, no faith, different cultures and lifestyles

This is achieved through enhancing pupils' understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity.  Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based issues have been followed and supported by learning in RE, SMSC and PHSE.  Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning.
